Castanets
The Castanets are also called the Kesekese or the Kesekeseni, and are from the Guinean highlands in the region called Faranah. A gourd disk creates the base and strips of palm fronds are interwoven with the strands of a potato sac and filled with the seeds of the baobab tree.
The Castanets are adorned with raffia or with strips of a bag of rice, and create a distinctive “swish” sound when shaken in an up-and-downwards motion. They are often played in pairs.
