Wasahumba
The Wasahumba is made with a forked branch and adorned with gourd disks. It is a shaker used by many tribes in West Africa including the Mandingo, Susu and Fulani, and is played in different ways by each of the tribes.
The Mandingo traditionally play them in pairs at initiation ceremonies. The initiates use them to alert passers-by of their presence (as it is taboo to be seen during this rite) and to ward off bad spirits. Traditionally, the number of disks would correspond with the age of the initiate.
