Dundun

The Dundun (or Djun-Djun) originated in the Ancient Empire of Mali, though presently they are played all over West Africa.

The Dundun is actually the term for a set of three separate cylindrical, double-headed bass drums. The three drums, from smallest to largest, are the Kenkeni, Sangbang, and Dundumba (literally big Dundun).

Each of these bass drums are carved from a solid log and covered in a cowhide, and are played with sticks. The set can be played together resting upright on the floor, or on a stand with the drums on their side, smaller on top of larger. Each drum can also be played singly, worn over the shoulder. Each drum has a corresponding bell and it is often attached to the drum itself.
