Bolon
The Bolon is the traditional stringed-bass of the Mandingo tribe. It is made of a large hollowed gourd (or two dried halves sewn together) covered in a goatskin. Four goat skin strings are attached to a large curved piece of wood, which goes through the gourd, and a metal adornment at the end of the wood called a Sese creates a tambourine sound as one strums the strings.
The Bolon is played seated, between the player’s legs with the strings facing inwards. The thumbs of both hands are used to strum the strings, while the palms are used to slap the gourd like a drum to keep the rhythm of the beat.
The Bolon is traditionally played at hunter’s ceremonies.
