Ibn Battuta
The famous fourteenth-century Moroccan traveller Ibn Battuta visited the Mali Empire in the years 1352 and 1353, and his account is an important first-hand written description of the Empire a few decades after Mansa Musa's death.
In his writings, Ibn Battuta recorded his impression of the Empire of Mali as an atmosphere of peace and prosperity. Accustomed to seeing African peoples only in the role of slaves, Ibn Battuta was amazed to see them governing an empire that rivaled anything he had seen in North Africa and on his extensive travels in Asia.
